Small, large, prickly, soft…
There is a variety and colour for everyone! The range of cacti is incredible nowadays and every variety is unique. To grow them requires quite a bit of patience however: some varieties will take up to 18 months before it has even grown 5cm! The main requirement in the growing process is light. The other 3 ingredients are water, nutrition and the right temperature.
Next to above mentioned requirements, experience is also a key factor according to our supplier, cactus and succulent grower Ubink. At the nursery, which is based in Kudelstaart, different varieties are crossbred to create new ones and forgotten varieties are brought back into the 21st century. Ubink also has a nursery on the Canary’s; they grow the seeds for the plants on Tenerife. Back in The Netherlands, part of Ubink’s cacti are put in a ‘cabriolet greenhouse’. This makes the plants sturdier and strong enough for transportation. And it gives them their pretty colours!
